Entry, extending your visit and the first weeks
The tourist period and extending it at the Polícia Federal, how to fly to Brazil, what an airport transfer costs and where to start after arriving.
Most people arrive in Brazil as tourists and sort out their papers once there. Below is what is known about the tourist period and extending it, about the flight, and about the first steps after landing. Entry rules depend on citizenship and change: check them before you travel.
Checked on 8 October 2026.
In short
- In December 2024 citizens of Russia and Belarus were allowed to stay in Brazil for 90 days within 180; under bilateral agreements the period can be extended by another 90 days without leaving the country.
- The extension is filed in person at the Polícia Federal. According to the gov.br page the fee is R$ 110.44; the post's author named about US$ 20.
- There are no direct flights from Russia to Brazil; people connect through Dubai, Doha, Casablanca, Addis Ababa or Istanbul.
- Straight after landing you need a CPF, then a SIM and a bank account.
The tourist period and extending it
As described by the @russo_no_brasil author, citizens of Russia and Belarus get 90 days within 180 on entry. You can extend your stay by another 90 days without leaving the country (post, 01.12.2024):
- Fill in the form on the Polícia Federal website.
- Pay the fee by GRU. The author paid about US$ 20 in 2024; the gov.br page "Prorrogar Estada como Turista no Brasil" now states R$ 110.44 (revenue code STN 140090).
- Book an appointment at the PF (some offices, for example in São Paulo, need no appointment).
- Come with the documents: the passport you entered with, a ticket to a third country (a booking will do), the payment receipt, and proof of accommodation (an Airbnb statement or a lease). They may ask for proof of funds: the author was not asked, and for others it was enough to show a card or cash.
A PF officer makes the decision; the author has not heard of refusals, and he himself got his passport back with a new stamp after 10 minutes. The service is requested in person: up to 72 hours go on the bank processing the payment and about 20 minutes on the interview. If the tourist period has expired, the immigrant is fined and notified that within 60 days they must regularise their status or leave; the amount of the fine is calculated at the appointment (the official page).
If you eventually plan to get residence, see Residence.
How to fly
There are no direct flights from Russia to Brazil. As described in July 2025, people fly via Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) and Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) to São Paulo (GRU); only Emirates flies directly to Rio (GIG), and some tickets to Rio include a connection in São Paulo (post, 05.07.2025).
Check which documents you need for a transit on the TravelDoc.aero website: that is what the author did on an airline's advice, and he was told that a layover in Paris was possible without a Schengen visa (post, 12.02.2025). At boarding in Istanbul for the flight to São Paulo, people were checked for a Brazilian residence permit. On a long layover Egypt Air provided a free hotel (post, 22.07.2025).
Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the time of travel (post, 18.10.2022).
An airport transfer
A private transfer, where the driver meets you at the exit, helps with luggage and stops at a shop, usually cost about R$ 300 in September 2026. The author advises comparing it with the Uber Black fare from Galeão airport (GIG) to Barra da Tijuca: private transfers use cars of this class or better (post, 15.09.2026).
